About Cutplan

A visible length model.
A practical shopping estimate.

Cutplan groups the pieces you request into identical stock lengths, showing the assumptions and remaining material for each suggested board.

The planner accepts finished lengths and quantities, one stock length, a saw-kerf allowance and a combined end allowance. It sorts longer pieces first, then places each piece into the first board with sufficient space. That approach is called first-fit decreasing.

A suggestion with limits

First-fit decreasing is a heuristic. It does not search every possible combination or guarantee the smallest board count. The arithmetic lower bound is shown to help you assess the suggestion, but that lower bound can be impossible to achieve with the requested pieces.

This is a one-dimensional length model. Stock width, thickness, grain, defects, fittings, machine constraints and material suitability are not checked. The diagram is a grouping illustration, not a physical cutting sequence or construction drawing.

Keep your shopping record

Each board lists its pieces, kerf loss, end allowance and remaining offcut length. Add your own board quote and delivery amount for a stock budget. Download a text plan or print the page to retain the assumptions with the quantities.
